Privacy policy
Your privacy matters to us. At Peter (Minseok Jung, "Peter", "we", "us" or "our"), we're committed to handling your personal information responsibly. This policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, how we use it, and your rights over it.
Got questions? Reach out to us anytime at [email protected].
Who we are
Peter is an iPhone app that turns your own lecture slides, notes and recordings into a study path, flashcards and a tutor that cites the page it took each answer from. It is provided by Minseok Jung, South Korea, which is the data controller for the data described here. We're responsible for keeping your data secure and for handling it in line with the laws that apply to you.
We work with a small number of trusted providers (an AI service, hosting, file conversion, and Apple and Google for sign-in and payments) to make Peter work. When we share data with them, we make sure they handle it with the same care and legal compliance we do.
What data we collect
Information you provide
- Your account. You sign in with Apple or Google. We receive your email address and an account identifier. Apple shares your name the first time you sign in, if you choose to; Google shares your name and profile photo. You can change the name Peter uses for you in Settings.
- Your study material. The files you add (PDFs, photos, Word, PowerPoint and Excel files, audio and video), the recordings you make in the app, their transcripts, and the sets, paths, decks, progress and Ask Peter chats made from them. Whenever you are signed in, all of this — including the original files and recordings — is backed up to private storage tied to your account (up to 2 GB), so your library comes back after a reinstall or on another iPhone. There is no way to use Peter without this backup.
- Your profile. Your name and, if you set one, your profile photo, backed up with your library.
- Purchases. Subscriptions are bought through Apple, so we never see your payment details. Apple tells us the status of your subscription (active, in trial, expired or refunded) so we know what your account can use.
- Support messages. Anything you send us when you contact support.
Please don't add material or messages containing other people's sensitive personal information (health, financial or similar details) unless you have the right to, and keep your own sensitive details out of Ask Peter where you can: everything you add is backed up and read by the AI as described below.
Automatically collected data
- Usage counts. How many requests you make and how much AI processing they use, per day and per month, so we can apply fair-use limits.
- Device integrity. An app-specific device identifier and an Apple App Attest key, used to confirm requests come from a genuine copy of the app and to prevent abuse. These are not used to track you across other apps or websites.
- Server logs. Our servers keep short-lived technical logs of requests (timestamps, part of your account or device identifier, and your IP address), used only to run and secure the service.
- What we don't collect. We do not use advertising, analytics or crash-reporting services, and we do not track you across apps or websites. Notifications are scheduled on your iPhone; we do not use a push-notification service. We do not send marketing emails.
Why we collect your data
- To make what you ask for: learning paths, questions, flashcards and Ask Peter answers from your material.
- To keep your library backed up to your account, so it comes back after a reinstall.
- To provide your subscription and apply usage limits.
- To keep the service secure and prevent abuse.
- To answer you when you contact support.
We do not sell your personal data, and we do not use your material for advertising or to train AI models.
Data sharing
We share data only with the providers that make Peter work, and only what each one needs:
- Our AI provider — the large language model that reads your material and writes paths, questions, flashcards and answers. It receives the pages of your documents and your images, the transcripts of recordings (never the audio or video itself), your Ask Peter messages and attachments, and file names. Under our agreement with the provider, this content is not used to train or improve its models. While you are chatting with Ask Peter, the provider holds a copy of that set's material for about 15 minutes after your last message (up to 24 hours at most) so follow-up questions answer faster; it may also retain requests briefly to check for abuse.
- A file-conversion service — converts Word, PowerPoint and Excel files to PDF so they can be read accurately. It receives the file and its name, only when you add one; your iPhone downloads the converted PDF from the service directly, and the file is deleted there as soon as that download finishes.
- Our hosting provider — hosts accounts, the backup of your library and our servers (in the United States). It holds your account details, your backed-up library and files, usage counts and subscription status. Its platform logs may record your IP address for a short time.
- Apple — Sign in with Apple, payments, App Attest and on-device transcription. When you subscribe, Apple receives your Peter account identifier so the purchase can be matched to your account.
- Google — only if you sign in with Google: Google provides your email, name and profile photo, and your iPhone fetches the photo from Google directly.
We will name the specific providers on request, and we name them where the law requires it.
Beyond these providers, we disclose data only if the law requires it (for example a valid court order), and if Peter is ever sold or merged, your data would pass to the new owner under this policy.
These providers process data in the United States. If you use Peter from the EU, the UK or elsewhere, your data is transferred there under the providers' standard contractual clauses and, where available, their EU–US Data Privacy Framework certifications.
Children's privacy
Peter is for people aged 13 and over (14 and over in South Korea, where the law sets that age). If you are under 18, you need a parent or guardian's permission to use Peter, and they may contact us to see, correct or delete your data. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13; if you believe a child under 13 has given us data, contact us and we will delete it.
How we keep your data safe
Data is encrypted in transit. Your backed-up library is stored privately and only your account can access it. Recordings are transcribed on your iPhone, and only the transcript is sent to the AI. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your data and we limit who can reach it.
Your library on your iPhone is included in your iCloud and computer backups like any other app data, if you have those turned on. That copy is held by Apple under Apple's terms.
Legal basis for processing
- Performance of a contract — to provide the app and your subscription.
- Legitimate interests — to keep the service secure, prevent abuse and apply fair-use limits.
- Consent — where you choose to give it, for example when you allow notifications or the microphone. You can withdraw it at any time in your iPhone's Settings.
- Legal obligations — where the law requires us to keep or share certain records.
Who can access your data?
You. Your library is tied to your account and only your account can read it. Our own access is limited to what is needed to run the service and to help you when you ask us to. Our providers process data on our instructions, as described above. We do not give anyone else access unless the law requires it.
Cookies and tracking
The Peter app uses no cookies and no tracking. This website sets no cookies of its own and uses no analytics or advertising. Some university logos on our homepage are loaded from a third-party image host, which receives your IP address when the page loads, as any image host does.
How long we keep your data
- Your account and library are kept until you delete them.
- Deleting a set removes it, its file and everything made from it from your iPhone and from the backup.
- Deleting your account permanently removes your whole library, its files and your profile.
- Usage counts (numbers, not your material) are kept for up to 90 days (daily counts) or 13 months (monthly counts) to apply limits and investigate abuse, and are deleted with your account.
- Your subscription record (its status and Apple transaction identifier) and your Sign in with Apple credential are kept while your account exists and deleted with it.
- Device integrity records are kept for the life of the install and are not tied to your name or email.
- Support messages are kept for as long as we need them to help you, then deleted.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (including under the GDPR and similar laws), you have the right to:
- Access — ask what personal data we hold about you.
- Correction — ask us to fix data that is wrong.
- Deletion — ask us to delete your data.
- Restriction — ask us to limit how we use it.
- Portability — receive a copy of your data in a usable format.
- Objection — object to processing based on our legitimate interests.
- Withdraw consent — at any time, without affecting what was done before.
If you live in California or another US state with a privacy law, you also have the rights to know, correct and delete your data, to opt out of its sale or sharing (we do neither), not to be treated differently for exercising these rights, and to appeal a decision we make about a request.
You may also complain to your local data-protection authority.
How to exercise your rights
Most of this you can do in the app. To delete everything, go to Settings → Profile → Delete account: this permanently deletes your account, your backed-up library, files and profile, your usage records, and disconnects Sign in with Apple. It cannot be undone. Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription — cancel it in your iPhone's Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions.
Peter has no export button yet. To receive a copy of your data, email us and we will send it to you.
For anything else, email [email protected] and we will reply within 30 days.
Updates to this privacy policy
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top, and tell you in the app if the change is significant. Continuing to use Peter after an update means you agree to the revised policy.
